Most industrial chemical processes rely on the use of catalysis, and both bulk and supported metal oxides (MOx) are among the most used solid catalysts in the modern chemical and petrochemical industry. Due to their importance, it is necessary to thoroughly characterize MOx catalysts to understand and correlate reactivity/selectivity-stability with catalysts’ surface structure. Among several spectroscopic techniques suitable for in situ characterization of solid catalysts, Raman spectroscopy is one of the most convenient for bridging the “material and pressure gaps” that are currently limiting the understanding and rational (less empirical) progress of heterogeneous catalysis. In this presentation, we will show some examples done in our laboratory where transient and steady-state kinetics with (operando) Raman-MS Spectroscopy are coupled to investigate the structural characteristics and redox behavior of supported and bulk metal oxide catalysts. The determination of “surface” temperature reduction and reduction/oxidation rates for supported and bulk metal oxides under different conditions will also be discussed.
