We develop non-destructive and sequential or integrated biorefining processes for terrestrial and marine biomass as well as strategies for converting the biopolymer fractions to engineered and functional materials. The recovered homo- and heteropolysaccharides are functionalized using custom-made protocols to achieve grafting, crosslinking, substitution, or the formation of hybrid systems. The modification reactions are devised to be as green as possible, including the use of recyclable catalysts, bio-based reagents, and to run efficiently in water solution and air.<br/>
