Making gold nanoparticles look like lipid vesicles and biological impacts thereofWhile protein corona formation around colloidal nanoparticles is well-known, less examined is the notion that lipids could be extracted from vesicles or membranes to form lipid coronas.  In this talk I will present results that illustrate how one could intentionally form lipid coronas around gold nanoparticles, to make the nanoparticles look like little lipid vesicles, mostly taking advantage of van der Waals forces. I will also illustrate how surfactants can be used as model surface coatings on gold nanoparticles to mimic lipids, and how this affects protein binding to “hard” lipid vesicles.
