Since the discovery of superconductivity in H<sub>3</sub>S at record temperatures, there has been a flurry of activity in identifying, synthesizing and studying other hydrides. Theoretical calculations suggest that LaH10, YH10 and CaH6 are potential hydrides with transition temperatures expected to be in the range 200 - 300 K. Even in the case of the now well-studied H3S, it has been recognized that the route to the synthesis of the superconducting phase from H2S is not straightforward and has stymied many research groups in establishing the superconducting properties in this simple binary system. This talk will focus on detailing the synthesis routes in each of these systems using a combination of in-situ synchrotron xray diffraction techniques, Raman and IR spectroscopy measurements both as a function of pressure and temperature. Our studies indicate that a more systematic sample preparation and measurement is possible in these systems.
