Over the last two decades, third-order femtosecond electronic and vibrational spectroscopies have become widely used tools to measure couplings and energy transfer between coupled electronic and vibrational states, respectively. Recently, two-dimensional electronic vibrational (2D EV) and vibrational electronic (2D VE) spectroscopies have been developed to directly correlate vibrational and electronic motions using a sequence mid-IR and optical/UV femtosecond fields. The selection rules for these spectroscopies will be discussed along with the experimental set-ups. Polarization-selectivity of the 2D VE and 2D EV experiments will be detailed using model systems.
