For the past several years our group has employed tetradentate ligands to stabilize high-valent organometallic nickel complexes. To improve the reactivity of Ni complexes stabilized by the pyridinophane ligands, a modification was made on the axial nitrogen’s. Adding one or two electron withdrawing groups (toluenesulfonyl vs methyl groups) enables the pyridinophane macrocycle to act as a pseudo-tridentate or bidentate ligand, therefore, destabilizing the Ni center. This leads to a faster reductive elimination and an overall faster reactivity. By studying the effects of the ligand on the nickel center, we aim to develop novel catalyst for oxidative C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation reactions, which could have important implications in organic transformations.
