The ever-increasing energy consumption demands is promoting the need for clean energy storage solutions with higher energy and power densities. Unfortunately, current commercial batteries and supercapacitors are not suitable to face some of the future needs. To power printable electronics and enable Interrnet of Things, a new generation of nanostructured electrode materials that provide a better performance need to be developed.<br/>Recently, a new family of two-dimensional materials called MXenes was discovered and quickly grabbed the attention due to its potential for electrochemical energy storage. The great advantages of MXenes for energy storage applications are that these materials contain a carbide or nitride core layer that guarantees good electronic conductivity and tunable transition metal oxides at the surface that can undergo redox reactions, therefore higher energy density can be achieved compared to traditional high-surface area materials. Here, we will discuss the implementation of our collaborative project on MXene between our US and Chinese research groups and our recent progress in the field of lithium-ion battery, sodium-ion battery and supercapacitors.
