High valent late transition metal halides such as platinum (IV) chlorides are easily photolyzed into the corresponding platinum (II) complexes.  The photo-reactivity of these compounds is typically explained by population of the Pt-Cl antibonding orbitals in the excited state.  A few years ago, we questioned whether such a behavior could also be observed for main group chlorides.  Realizing that heavy group 14-16 compounds have readily accessible II/IV, III/V and II/IV redox couples, respectively, we developed a family of complexes that contain these elements.  This presentation will describe the synthesis of these complexes as well as their photoreduction chemistry.  An emphasis will be placed on our recent results concerning the photoreduction of Pt/Ge complexes.<br/>
