Ionic liquids are of remarkable effect on lubrication application, and attract more and more attentions in lubrication technology area recently. However, the use of  conventional halogen ionic liquid fluid may cause metal components corrosion in operation. On the other hand, protic and non-protic ionic liquids possess different ionization properties, which raises distinct ionic bond strengths and affect lubricant behavior furtherly. In this work, we synthesized two kinds of halogen-free non-protic ionic liquids and their protic counterparts to compare the tribological performance in different molecular structures. According to the four-ball test experiment result, the wear scars of non-protic ionic liquids reduce apparently but protic ionic liquids have smaller coefficient of friction. Since the non-protic ionic liquids can ionize more ions absorbing on metal surface to lessen abrasion, and protic ionic liquids prefer to form more layer structures to lower coefficient of friction.
