The aerobic oxidation of alkyl arenes to their corresponding carbonyl compounds has been achieved using mesoporous manganese oxide and molecular oxygen in the presence of organic solvents. The catalyst is heterogeneous and highly selective towards this reaction. The catalyst was characterized by Powder X-Ray Diffraction Spectrometry (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and the products were identified by Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The catalyst has a broad substrate scope and can be reused while retaining the catalytic activity.<br/>
