Photochromic molecules can undergo a reversible isomerization upon irradiation with light that can be easily identify by the color change and difference in the absorption spectra. We have been exploring the use of organic photochromic molecules, such as spiropyrans, as pendant functionalities on ligating groups. When properly connected, the electronic effects of the photo-induced isomerization can be transmitted to the ligating group.  Upon coordination to a metal, these changes at the ligating group equate to a light-induced change in the ligand field and subsequently the redox properties of the metal.  In short, this represents an alternate strategy for light harvesting by a metal complex. We have initiated a program for the synthesis of photoswitchable ligands (PSLs) and their transition metal complexes. In this continuing attempt, we are exploring the photophysical properties of the ligands and the complexes to gain a better understanding of the factors that contribute to efficient changes at the metal center. In this presentation an overview of our activity in this field will be highlighted.<br/>
