A subset of ladder-type conjugated molecules were synthesized through N-directed borylation reactions. The intramolecular boron−nitrogen coordinate bonds played a key role in rendering the rigid and coplanar conformation of these molecules and their corresponding electronic structures. Experimental investigation and theoretical simulation revealed the dynamic nature of such coordination, which allowed for active manipulation of the optical properties of these molecules. Upon oxidation or reduction, the rigid molecular conformation facilitated delocalization and stabilization of the corresponding radical cations and anions. These robust yet reversible redox states allowed for the fabrication of multi-stable electrochromic devices from these B—N derivatives, which demonstrated vivid color change when different external voltages were applied.
