Iron oxide (Fe2O3) thin-films and features synthesized from a soluble organometallic complex deposited using inkjet printing will be presented. Iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) is a commonly used as durable pigments in paints, coatings and colored concretes. Since iron oxide (synthetic magnetite) also has ferromagnetic properties, it is also used in sensors, magnetic data storage, and magneto-optical switches. Rather than depositing performed pigments, we developed a metal organic decomposition (MOD) complex that reacts with pulsed flash irradiation to form iron oxide. We synthesized water soluble iron (III) complexes using mono- and multidentate nitrogen containing ligands with a range of molecular weight. The ligand molecular weight was found to have an impact on the minimum curing temperature. These iron (III) complexes were then formulated into water-based inkjet inks. Inkjet printing is a technology used to fabricate flexible printing electronic components. We will present printing and curing condition for iron oxide deposition using our MOD approach. Printed iron oxide features on a variety of substrates will be characterized using thermal analysis, SEM imaging, vibrational spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques.
