Optical and imaging technologies with infrared (IR) light is an emerging frontier for a wide range of defense, civilian and transportation applications. Currently, there are only a select number of materials that are capable of transmitting, guiding, or reflectivity IR light. In this talk, we will discuss our recent progress with a new class of IR optical polymers, termed, chalcogenide hybrid inorganic/organic polymers (CHIPs). This new class of materials exhibit the highest refractive index (n ~ 2.0) of any synthetic polymer in the NIR, SWIR and mid-IR, while also retaining excellent transparency. We will discuss our recent efforts to prepare and process these materials into optical components for a variety of IR devices for thermal imaging and IR reflective coatings.
