In this study, we report a microwave-assisted synthesis of magnetic nanocomposite particles for water oxidation reactions. The particles were made up of a Fe2O3 as a core and subsequently a manganese oxide or cobalt oxide shell. Water oxidation was examined using Ce4+ as the sacrificial oxidant. The Oxygen evolution was also confirmed under photochemical conditions using Ru(bpy)3 2+ as a photosensitizer and persulfate as a sacrificial agent. The differences in catalytic activity among these catalysts have been probed using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and compositional analyses.
