Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA’s) are potentially toxic, naturally occurring secondary products typically found in the plant family Heliotropiaceae, a segregate of the Boraginaceae. As a part of continuing alkaloid analysis of the family Heliotropiaceae, the North American species Heliotropium procumbens and H. glabrisculum were analyzed to establish PA profiles. This is the first attempt to determine complete PA structure in these two species. Preliminary TLC analysis of the samples displayed the presence of mostly saturated PA’s in H. procumbens and mostly unsaturated PA’s in H. glabrisculum. GC-MS analysis, chromatographic based isolation, and NMR structural elucidation is proposed to establish the major compounds in each of these species.
