The synthesis of ruthenium complexes having either a tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligand or a terpyridine ligand is described from a common precursor, [Ru(NCCH3)6]2+. The reaction conditions required to metallate each ligand were divergent, highlighting differences such as ligand strength, oxidative stability, and binding motif (meridinal vs facial). Further synthetic elaboration of the metallated complexes was attempted, yielding complexes with coordinated imines and nitriles. The synthesis of these complexes and preliminary investigations into their reaction chemistry allow comparisons between the tris(pyrazolyl)methane and terpyridine ligands.
