Copper indium sulfide nanocrystals (CuInS2) have the potential to be useful in a variety of manufacturing and biomedicine applications. This research demonstrates the synthesis of stable CuInS2 nanocrystals including a reproducible aqueous phase transfer method using ligand exchange in order to further study the toxicity of the nanocrystals using zebrafish (Danio Rerio) embryos. Additionally, concerns involving stability are investigated, including retention of optical properties, aggregation in aqueous environments, and isolation of the nanocrystals from organics during phase transfer. The nanocrystals were characterized using a variety of techniques, including UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence, and transmission electron microscopy. The toxicity of the nanocrystals was evaluated at a variety of dosages to determine the onset of developmental defects and mortality in the zebrafish embryos.
