Phosphonates are important molecules due to their significance in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Alpha functionalization of phosphonates has been explored through the use of a novel dicyclohexylamine zinc pivolate base (Cy<sub>2</sub>NZnOPiv). This base is easily synthesized from inexpensive reagents and can be used for the deprotonative zincation of a variety of C–H bonds, including phosphonates. Organozinc pivolate intermediates have been studied for copper-catalyzed cross-coupling with hypervalent iodine reagents. This work aims to establish a facile and valuable direct alpha C-H functionalization of phosphates.<br/>
