Innovations in synthetic chemistry are foundational to the drug discovery process. Indeed, Merck's commitment to fundamental research in catalysis and synthesis has positively impacted the speed of execution in medicinal and process chemistry projects. This presentation will highlight case studies in which the Merck co-op & internship program alongside academia-industry partnerships have led to the development of novel useful methodologies of interest to synthetic chemists. Specifically, we will discuss the invention of a room temperature palladium-catalyzed thioetherification reaction through data-rich experimentation and systematic catalyst optimization.
