Previous work with polysilazne polymers has demonstrated that additive manufacturing can be used to obtain unique structural preceramics via radical initiated 3D printing techniques. However, once the structures are converted into ceramics via pyrolysis at temperatures above 1000 °C, they are often plagued with brittleness, low rigidity, and non-uniform volume loss. In an effort to understand and combat these issues, this work aims to investigate the network properties of both the pre- and post-pyrolyzed polysilazne networks as a function of crosslink density. These studies focus on thiol-ene networks formed between vinyl polysilazane oligomers and various multifunctional thiols. Samples were characterized by TGA, DSC, DMA, and SEM. Preliminary rheology studies were also performed. The results of these studies will be discussed in further detail.
