<br/>The Ball State University Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) is an award-winning student organization located in Muncie, IN that provides opportunities for professional development, scientific communication, and community outreach to both Ball State students and the Muncie and Indianapolis communities. To more fully perform its duties this chapter has expanded it’s officer board to include an outreach officer, who is responsible for coordinating volunteers for all events and promoting events via social media.<br/>A major focus of SAACS is to educate Ball State Chemistry students about their potential paths to completion of an undergraduate degree and beyond. Every semester, SAACS invites professional speakers from both industrial and academic backgrounds. Tours of industrial settings are organized to show students what a career in the chemistry industry may look like. REU and summer research presentations are also organized to make students aware of research opportunities found on Ball State’s campus, other universities, and organizations across the country. SAACS members have recently participated in REU programs at Yale, Harvard, and NASA, to name a few.<br/>Educational assistance is a growing focal point of SAACS. It is tradition that SAACS hosts review sessions before all general chemistry exams and has recently expanded to offer organic chemistry study tables every week where students work together on practice problems under the supervision of experienced students. SAACS also hosts résumé and CV workshops to help students of scientific disciplines understand how to effectively compete during the application process.<br/>A major goal of this chapter is to communicate the benefit and importance of the sciences to the community. SAACS participates in several large events held by its local ACS chapter in Indianapolis, specifically National Chemistry Week at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum and Celebrate Science Indiana. SAACS also hosts events similar to this on the Ball State campus. The largest event of this nature is the annual Science Day celebration that coincides with the ACS’s recognition of the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week. At Science Day, SAACS brings together Ball State student organizations from several scientific disciplines to put on a variety of hands-on and demonstrative exhibits for the Muncie community. Several hundred children and parents attend annually.
