Measurements of low levels of actinides in environmental sediment samples can provide information about nearby anthropogenic activities and past releases. Methods have been developed for the determination of plutonium, neptunium, and americium in environmental soil and sediment samples. The ability to measure all three elements from the same aliquot and the short time frame required for analysis are significant advantages of the method. The method has been used to determine neptunium, plutonium, and americium concentrations in several environmental matrix standard reference materials available from NIST, including SRM 4357 (Radioactivity Standard).
