Recent results from our lab concerning the use of Pd(II)- and Ni(II)-based catalysts for ethylene homo- and copolymerizations of ethylene will be presented. A major emphasis will be on the copolymerizations of ethylene with vinyl trialkoxysilanes which yield copolymers that can be readily cross-linked by exposure to moisture. Mechanistic details of the copolymerizations will presented including kinetic studies, catalyst resting states, low temperature detection of intermediates, determination of insertion barriers and the impact of the modes of chain growth on polymer microstructures.
