This project explores the use of beeswax and honey in reducing the amount of antibiotic resistance. Both have proven to contain antimicrobial properties. This project aims to show that a mixture of beeswax and essential oils will work synergistically to provide a stronger antimicrobial agent than either of the two alone. Some essential oils are known to prevent bacterial growth. Many of the antimicrobial properties of essential oils are due to their components, which are largely characterized as phenols. We herein report the synthesis of materials based on beeswax and honey and their efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These materials have also demonstrated high UV resistance. Not all antimicrobial surfaces are completely natural. Those made from other materials often allow for the growth of bacteria over time. Using honey and beeswax as a base for these surfaces is advantageous because they are natural and will not lead to harmful degradation products. Bacteriological testing and physical characteristics on these newly synthesized materials are reported herein.
