An understanding of reaction intermediates and mechanistic pathways can provide information allowing the further diversification of a known transformation. Previous work has shown that pyridyl ketones undergo rhodium-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond activation and decarbonylation. With the goal of achieving alternative functionalization of the carbon-carbon bond, efforts are underway to examine the mechanism of this reaction. This presentation will provide an overview of the current understanding of this mechanism gleaned from analysis by NMR spectroscopy, <i>in-situ </i>IR spectroscopy, and competition reactions between various substituted pyridyl ketones.
