Metal phosphates have important applications as oxide conductor, catalysts, and optical materials including glasses, phosphors, and laser host materials. Single-sources precursors for lanthanum phosphate phases were synthesized by the stoichiometric reactions of monoalkyl and di-alkyl phosphate esters with lanthanum nitrate. The alkyl groups were varied and included isopropyl, butyl and 2-ethyl hexyl. These precursors thermally decompose at low temperatures (250-300 °C) producing lanthanum phosphate phases. The characterization of the products obtained from thermal pyrolysis of the precursors will be discussed in light of possible structures. Methods of characterization included thermogravimetric analysis, solid-state <sup>31</sup>P NMR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
