Thiolactones have been recently used for catalyst-free polymer synthesis and functionalization due to their high reactivity towards amines and further reaction with activated electrophiles. A new synthetic method have been developed in order to access functionalized thiolactones, specifically y-thiolactones, from a free radical addition of a xanthate to an alkene group followed by a thermolysis. Due to the easy synthetic procedure, an array of sulfur-based functionalized thiolactones have been synthesized. Furthermore, the reactivity of these thiolactones containing a reactive thiol and thiol derivatives towards gold surfaces have been probed as a preliminary study prior to polymer functionalization based on these thiolactones.
