Illicium cf. ekmanii Smith is a rare and endemic species to the island of Hispaniola, where it was recently located and studied in the field at Loma Miranda, in the Monsenor Nouel Province, Dominican Republic. Leaves, bark, seedpods, and sprouts were collected from several small trees (7-8 m) for essential oil and aroma composition analyses. Volatiles and odor-active compounds were isolated by hydrodistillation (HD) and headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME), respectively. More than 60 compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and linear retention index comparisons. Essential oils were dominated by sesquiterpenes, with the major volatile components observed in all plant parts consisting of varied amounts of α-cubebene, caryophyllene, epizonarene, bornyl acetate, and curcumene. These results are the first detailed analyses of I. ekmanii essential oil and SPME-aroma composition and this information is a valuable contribution to the knowledge of chemical diversity within the Illicium genus.
