Cutting edge research is increasingly interdisciplinary, pushing the boundaries of what is traditionally considered fundamental chemistry versus engineering and complicating efforts to silo scientists into subfields such as physical chemistry, organic chemistry, or biochemistry.  If you are trying to land an academic job at an R1 university, how can such interdisciplinary chemists find where they “fit”? I will share experiences from my own journey navigating both chemistry and engineering departments and the lessons I learned about how to succeed while straddling the boundaries of fundamental and applied science. <br/>
