A single-molecule magnet (SMM) is a molecule that displays slow magnetization relaxation while being below a characteristic blocking temperature. An SMM results from a combination of a high ground state spin (S) value, and an easy axis magnetic anisotropy. This is important to nanomagnetism from the fact that the SMM represents an alternative route to nanoscale magnetic materials such as molecular bottom-up approach. An SMM exhibits classical hysteresis behavior which is a diagnostic feature of any magnet however, SMMs can store several hundred-fold more digital information than traditional magnets. This has allowed SMM to be proposed for applications such as ultra-high-density memory devices, spintronics, and quantum computing. Recently, mixed 3d-4f clusters have attracted much interest in the SMM field, with amalgamating the often-large spins and anisotropy of lanthanide ions with the propensity of Mn<sub>x </sub>clusters to possess large spin S values. Herein, we are exploring the binding capability of the ligand, 4,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridin-3-ol (PNH<sub>2</sub>) with manganese and lanthanide ions at their high-oxidation states. The detailed characterization with single-crystal X-ray crystallography, Infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopies, CHN elemental and Thermal Gravimetric analysis and magnetic susceptibility studies will be provided.
