Microscale-based reactor is considered for deoxygenation process as a result of its higher heat and mass transfer, higher surface to volume ratio and easier scale up compared with the conventional fixed bed reactor. In this research, Pd/TiO2 catalyst was used in microscale-based reactor for biohydrogenated diesel (BHD) production using refined palm oil as the raw material. The catalyst was coated on the substrate with different techniques—washcoating and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The washcoating technique was studied in different solutions which were suspension, sol-gel, and single-step sol-gel. The coated catalysts were characterized by several techniques which were 3D-optical profilers measurement, SEM-EDX, XRD, BET, and adhesion test. The BHD products were analyzed by a gas chromatograph with an FID detector to investigate triglyceride conversion and space time yield of BHD (g of BHD/ g catalyst/ h). The catalyst coated by EPD technique exhibited the homogeneous layer as compared to washcoating technique. The Pd/TiO2 coated by washcoating technique with suspension slurry exhibited complete conversion and obtained space time yield at 4.9 g of BHD/g catalyst/h. The BHD products showed high content of n-hexadecane and n-octadecane which produced through hydrodeoxygenation pathway. The catalyst from the other coating technique will be further investigated.
