Cisplatin was first discovered by Rosenberg while carrying out a study using E. coli bacteria cells. Since this discovery many researchers have been interested in the effects of metal complexes when in contact with bacteria cells. Today, many researchers are using platinum- and ruthenium-containing complexes as antibacterial agents, and as such we have an interest in making such a contribution to the vital antibacterial research. In this study, [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)](PF6)2 1 (where dpq-F = 6-fluoro-2,3-di-pyridin-2-yl-quinoxaline) was synthesized and characterized; then the binuclear complex, [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2](PF6)2 2 was prepared through synthetic methods and characterized. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-visible and 1H, 13C, 19F, 195Pt NMR spectroscopies, electrochemistry, and ESI MS, where appropriate. The interaction of [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2](PF6)2 with guanosine and guanosine 5’-monophosphate(GMP) was investigated using 195Pt NMR spectroscopy and the results were compared to those obtained as with cisplatin. Antibacterial studies involving E. coli and S. aureus were carried out with the chloride salt of complex 2, [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2]Cl2. In our study, the gram-positive bacteria, S. aureus was 100% inhibited at 1.25 mM for [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2]Cl2. At 1.25 mM, the growth of both bacteria was completely inhibited. E. coli appeared to recover after 12 h of exposure but S. aureus remained inhibited at 1.25 mM. These results indicated that S. aureus appeared to be more sensitive to the toxic effects of [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2]Cl2. This evidence was further supported by the fact that E. coli was resistant to 0.156 mM of [Ru(bpy)2(dpq-F)PtCl2]Cl2, whereas S. aureus showed some sensitivity to this low test concentration.
