Porphyirins, bacteriochlorins, phthalocyanines and other related macrocycles show significant progress for the treatment of cancer and microbial infections. However, their utility has been limited by their hydrophobicity and selectivity. In this presentation we highlight our recent developments involving undergraduate students in the synthesis and biological evalution of a series of different of carbohydrate-based porphyrin, bacteriochlorin and phthalocyanine conjugates specifically targeting carbohydrate binding proteins.
