Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have been generally regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost and benign environmental friendliness. However, several problems impede the practical application of TMCs based anodes. On one hand, nonnegligible volume variation of TMCs anodes occurs during the repeated Li+/Na+ intercalation/extraction process, resulting in severe electrode pulverization. On the other hand, TMCs usually have poor electrical conductivity, which renders them disadvantageous as high power density electrodes. On the basis of the above understanding, nitrogen-doped ZnSe polyhedrons encapsulated by reduced graphene oxide (N-ZnSe@rGO) composites were successfully fabricated by utilizing ZIF-8@GO as precursors and a subsequent carbonization-selenylation process (Figure 1). The optimized N-ZnSe@rGO delivers an ultrahigh capacity (836 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and displays ultralong stability (464 mAh g−1 at a specific current of 2000 mA g−1 within 1000 cycles) as anode in lithium ion battery, while delivers a capacity of 285 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at 300 mA g−1 as sodium ion battery anode. Benefiting from the combination with enhanced conductive and protective rGO, the unique N-ZnSe@rGO hybrid can effectively facilitate the electronic transportation and alleviate volume changes during the cycling process. The promising strategies and associated opportunities here demonstrate great potential in the fabrication of advanced TMCs based anode materials for long-life LIBs and SIBs.
