<b>Abstract: </b>This research focuses on the synthesis of an aldol alcohol intermediate with an emphasis on catalytic and production of specific product using the intermediate. An aldol reaction between cyclopentanone and furfural originally produces products 2-(2-furylmethylidene)cyclopentanone and 2,5-bis(2-furylmethylidene)cyclopentanone, but with correct molar ratios and use of L-proline as a catalyst the intermediate can be isolated. The more sought-after product is 2-(2-furylmethylidene) cyclopentanone, which can be obtained by dehydration of the alcohol intermediate. Yields and spectroscopic data on the intermediate and products are presented.
