Ligands with oxime functional groups are noted for their ability to stabilize normally inaccessible oxidation states such as Ni(III) or Cu(III). Previous work in our research group includes the synthesis of two novel tris-oxime ligands, TRIPHOX and TRITOX, as well as the synthesis and X-ray structural characterization of the [Ni(TRIPHOX)Cl2] complex. The featured ligands in this project are the building blocks for TRIPHOX and TRITOX: 2-chloroacetophenone oxime and 1-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone oxime, respectively. Their syntheses, and the subsequent syntheses of their first-row transition-metal complexes, were explored. The ligands were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, and the complexes by UV-vis spectroscopy and magnetic-susceptibility measurements. In addition, the experimental results were supplemented by molecular modeling. Furthermore, complexes with the non-chloro analogues of our ligands (acetophenone oxime and 3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone oxime) have been synthesized and characterized to determine the effect of the chlorine substituent on structure and bonding.
