The Approaches to Teaching Inventory (ATI) was originally developed in the 1990s for use in British Commonwealth higher education systems as a tool for categorizing instructor perceptions of the learning environment. It is now being used in American higher education settings in both multidisciplinary and chemistry specific studies. The use of the ATI is not without controversy. There have been concerns about the psychometric properties of this instrument which call into question the reliability and validity of ATI scores. It is imperative to address these issues before the ATI becomes widely used in the chemistry education research community. A revised version of the instrument has been developed, the Revised-Approaches to Teaching Inventory (R-ATI). The R-ATI has been administered to the faculty of a large regional university. The poster will describe the basis for and the modifications made to the original ATI as well as psychometric evaluation of the R-ASI, including confirmatory factor analysis.
