The elucidation of the size/composition/structure and the reactivity is instrumental for addressing fundamental aspects of catalysis to design advanced catalysts. To study the influence of promoter and the effect of the support nanostructure, the endothermic cracking and dehydrogenation of n-dodecane was investigated over well-defined Pt and Pt-Sn nanocatalysts on various oxides supports. The correlation between catalytic activity and dynamic change in nanocatalysts was studied under the realistic reaction conditions by simultaneous in-situ Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy(XAS). Combining with quantitative analysis of the reaction products, the results reveal a strong correlation between catalytic performance and the size of catalysts as well as the stability of the nanoparticles in supercritical condition of hydrocarbons. The combination of in situ XAS and SAXS methods offer a great potential for the real-time monitoring of catalysts in the supercritical condition. The presented results suggest that monitoring the reaction system in realistic reaction conditions could lead to a fundamentally new level of understanding of nanocatalysis.
