The Eckerd College ACS Student Affiliates Chapter may not be home to many members, but the reach of these students’ ambitions stretches far beyond the shores of our waterfront campus. Just last year, six of our members flew out to NOLA for the ACS National Meeting and Exposition to present their research projects from the previous summer. In the spirit of Eckerd’s chapter, they did not stop at just presenting their own research. Several of Eckerd’s ACS members committed themselves to mastering the chemistry of this kitchen and entered the ACS-sponsored Communicating Chemistry Creole Cooking Competition. In the heart of the French Quarter, Eckerd College's graduate students earned second place in a field of food science! When our members are not working on their own research or are not preoccupied by classes or labs, they may be found selling periodic table cupcakes out front of our campus Starbucks or preparing for an ACS Program-in-a-Box. Our members actively involve the greater Eckerd community in these programs: students of all majors and minors have been welcome to learn about the opioid crisis and explore the chemistry of Mars, with more opportunities yet to come. Under the canopy of the James Center for Molecular Sciences, our ACS members live by the same philosophy: strive for excellence every day.
