The Internet of Things (IoT) often refers to interconnected digital networking of physical objects or “things” embedded with computers, software, actuators and physical sensors. These “things” are used to monitor environments and share data in such settings as in industry, homes, personal wearable technology and healthcare. Many users interact with these systems as mysterious black boxes, but as IoT becomes more prevalent in the workplace, it is important for even the most technologically novice students to have some basic understanding of how “things” function, and even be able to troubleshoot problems. With the advent of cheap computers and sensors, it becomes increasingly easier for novices to develop projects around these tools and learn how to monitor the environment. Many websites now abound that show how to build projects around the Internet of Things.<br/><br/>The Internet of Chemistry Things (IoCT) chemistry elective, however, is a different approach that builds on the history of teaching chemists not to look at instrumentation as black boxes. In instrumental courses students often learn the basics of how the instrumentation works, but rarely do students get a chance to really explore the development of tools for creating chemistry measurements. In this course students learn how to program raspberry pi computers using the python programming language, build and interface with simple circuits and acquire data from chemical and physical sensors.<br/><br/>To facilitate learning, we created an OER website to share our IOCT content, https://ioct.tech/edu/ . The python material was a modification of material developed by CS POGIL (which has been adopted and made open access with permission), and sensor content was created specifically for this course. The presentation will give an overview of student projects with a focus on the classroom learning experience and how hypothes.is annotation service was used to flip the class and connect the lesson modules to disparate resources around the web. There will be a demo of the website, the use of hypothes.is and real time examples of student activities.
