19F magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising in vivo diagnostic technique due to the lack of endogenous fluorine signal and the favorable MR properties of the 19F nucleus. Paramagnetic metals can serve to modulate both the relaxation times and chemical shifts of nearby 19F nuclei, opening up opportunities for the development of responsive agents and agents that enable rapid image acquisition. The focus of this talk will be on fluorine-rich lipid nanoparticle agents that contain Fe3+ complexes as signal enhancers. The molecular properties of these agents will be discussed as well as their implementation in vivo for cell tracking and biomarker imaging. Newer avenues to add environmental sensing properties to these particles will also be discussed.
