Polymer nanocomposites have gained much attention due to the ability to enhance the composite properties relative to the pure polymer. In many cases, layered clays are functionalized prior to mixing with a polymer and producing a composite. The properties of the composite material are dependent on the interactions of the filler with the matrix therefore it is important to understand the relationship between functionalization and composite properties. In order to investigate this relationship composites were prepared with zirconium phosphate (ZrP), a layered material, and the properties of the composites were investigated. The ZrP was functionalized with a series of compounds using two methods; surface functionalization and full functionalization. The resulting composites were characterized using FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Overall, both types of functionalization produced particles that dispersed will in the polymer matrix and functional groups compatible with the polymer led to more uniform materials.
