While early efforts have been made to explore the chemistry of neutral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), limited progress has been made in the development of their anionic counterparts. A few examples of anionic carbenes have been reported recently as being versatile ligands for a variety of transition metal complexes. A new anionic NHC has been developed in our laboratory. The free carbene was characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The role of this new carbene as ligand for catalyticaly relevand transition metal complexes will be described.
