[Cp*Rh(diimine)] complexes have shown catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution. Protonation of these complexes have been shown to yield intermediates bearing the unique [η4-Cp*H] ligand, rather than generating [RhIII–H] complexes. Extensive studies have shown the role and properties of the diimine ligand; however, no studies on changing the substitution pattern of the [Cp*] ligand have been reported yet. Here, we report our work on substituting one methyl group of the [Cp*] ligand with n-propyl group and a simple proton. We prepared and isolated four new [Rh(bpy)] complexes (bpy is 2,2-bipyridyl) bearing modified [Cp*] ligand, which behave similarly to their [Cp*] analogues. However, their properties and stabilities after protonation appear to be distinctly different, as shown by spectroscopic data and electrocatalytic studies of hydrogen evolution.
