For the past few years, our research groups at the University of Delaware and University of Nebraska have been synthesizing novel magnetic nanoparticles and clusters and studying their magnetic and structural properties under a joint grant supported by DOE. Our particles program spans a wide range of interests from basic studies to technological applications that include permanent magnets, high density recording media and biomedicine. One of our major objectives is the control of nanometer-length-scale and real structure to synthesize metastable structures as a means of creating materials with high magnetization, large magnetocrystalline anisotropy and high ordering temperatures using non-equilibrium fabrication techniques. In the last few years our work has been focused on nanoparticles with properties drastically different from bulk made by the cluster beam deposition (Co2Ge, MnSi, CoSi, Co3Si), chemical synthesis with the high anisotropy L10 structure (FePt(Bi) and CoPt(Bi)) for magnetic recording media and most recently Fe3O4-Au clusters for biomedical applications. In this talk, I will summarize our research achievements in this program.
