The bimolecular reaction OH + CO → HOCO → H + CO2 impacts the CO/CO2 balance in the atmosphere and plays a major role in the release of heat during hydrocarbon combustion. There have been many studies of this important reaction, and it serves as a benchmark system for dynamics studies. Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectroscopy has provided product branching ratios and energetics used to test theoretical potential energy surfaces (PES) and dynamics calculations. Previous studies using PPC spectroscopy also show a strong impact of anion vibrational excitation on the OH + CO product branching ratio. The addition of a cryogenic octopole accumulation trap (COAT) allows for internal cooling of anion precursors and a tunable IR laser coupled to the PPC spectrometer allows for dissociative photodetachment studies of HOCO– anions that have been selectively vibrationally excited. This experimental setup will be used to study the effects of vibrational excitation on the dissociation dynamics of HOCO for comparison to quantum dynamics calculations.
