There has been increasing awareness about the lack of equity, diversity and inclusion in the scientific community. Fortunately, there has been some recent push back from the chemical enterprise, including the work of diversity champion Anne McNeil (www.diversifychemistry.com), and the publication by Mehta et al. (2018) in Angewandte Chemie (The Chemical Sciences and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, Volume 57, Issue 45, 14690-14698). Challenges arise as to how to integrate this “new” frontier into chemistry education. An ACS Core Value states, “<i>We believe in the strength of diversity in all its forms, because inclusion of diverse people, experiences, and ideas leads to superior solutions to world challenges and advances chemistry as a global, multidisciplinary science</i>.” Through this presentation we will discuss how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can serve as a lens to address concerns about diversity and inclusion from a global perspective. The SDGs provide a framework for a unique teaching and learning experience where students can make connections to the broader challenges of sustainability, and work together in solving a critical global challenge.
