The design and development of a sustainable, selective, multifunctional, and regenerable biopolymer-based adsorbent is demonstrated for the well-established and particularly challenging contaminant combination of arsenic and phosphate. Arsenic is a toxic and carcinogenic inorganic aqueous contaminant that results from both natural geochemical processes and anthropogenic releases. Its remediation is made difficult due to changes in chemical behavior (e.g., oxidation state) with changing system conditions (e.g., pH), as well as competition with background oxyanions. A mechanistic understanding of the relationship between selective adsorptive behavior for oxoanions and functionalization of chitosan using various transition metal cross-linkers is detailed.
