Over the last decade it has been demonstrated that nickel based catalysts are highly active for both conventional cross-coupling reactions and cross-electrophile coupling reactions. Although significant progress has been made in the development of new transformations, mechanistic understanding about nickel catalyzed reactions is often limited. In this presentation the mechanism of nickel catalyzed cross-coupling reactions involving both sp2 and sp3 hybridized substrates and cross-electrophile coupling reactions will be discussed. In particular, the role of paramagnetic nickel(I) species in these reactions will be described, as well as the influence of the reductant in cross-electrophile coupling reactions. Finally, guided by our mechanistic studies we will report improved precatalysts or optimized conditions for many of these reactions.
